Apple II Plus gets torn asunder and restored in this modern teardown (video)

Apple II Plus gets torn asunder and restored in this modern teardown video

Breathe in that vintage electronics musk, because it's not going to last -- at least for Todd Harrison, a computer hobbyist based in Mesa, Arizona. You see, for Todd, much of his appreciation for old equipment comes from tearing the units apart and restoring 'em to a like-new condition. Fortunately for us, he's taking everyone along for the ride in this teardown and cleanup of the Apple II Plus. Those with an appreciation for all things vintage will certainly want to put some time aside for his two video tours -- which rack up to nearly a full hour of computing marvel.

In the process, Todd shares a few tips and product recommendations for those looking to strip 30 years worth of grime from the casing, and he also reveals himself to be a bit of a hardware nerd: you'll find a detailed look at the Apple logic board, an explanation of the memory banks and see how the Apple II Plus can be expanded to 64K of RAM with the use of a language card. Peeks at the 6502 CPU from MOS Technology and the Applesoft BASIC ROM from Microsoft are also on deck, in addition to a bit of a surprise that Todd found lurking within the Apple Monitor III. With that said, cancel your evening plans and hop the break for the complete tour.

Video: MTM-tuned KTM X-Bow R lays down the law in Monaco

KTM X-Bow R by KTM for Monaco Police

Policing the streets of Monte Carlo and the outlaying Monegasque countryside (little of it though there is) presents a unique set of challenges. Contrary to popular perception, there is an enforced speed limit in the Mediterranean principality. Enforcing it, however, is another issue, because Monaco has a higher concentration of supercars than 99-percent of the countries on the globe. So while they may get away with patrolling in puny Citroën diesels just across the border in France, the gendarmerie in Monaco needs something a little faster.

Solution: the KTM X-Bow. And not just any X-Bow - the X-Bow R, which tuner MTM has fortified to the tune of 400 horsepower. Considering the vehicle's 1,700-pound curb weight, that's enough juice to give this patrol vehicle a power-to-weight ratio capable of embarrassing most supercars. Of course, the KTM wouldn't be of much use in the rain, but considering the Austrian plates on this car, we get the distinct feeling that the officials haven't actually acquired any of these just yet - as much as KTM and MTM might like to sell them a few. Check it out in the video clip below.

Gooden Scores First 2012 F2000 Win

iRacer Wyatt Gooden took his maiden 2012 F2000 Series Championship victory at Lime Rock Park, inheriting the lead after Robert La Rocca first tore off half a front wing dealing with lapped traffic, and Kyle Connery then went off in the late stages of the race, again, while working lapped traffic around the 1.53-mile circuit. GirlsInTech Pick Their Top 100 Women In Tech In Europe

GirlsintechlondonWhile in the US the visibility of women in technology startups is pretty well established, in Europe it's suffered a little from the more general problem of the fragmented nature of the European tech scene. Things have improved slightly in recent years (at least that's my impression, although who knows about the stats on the ground?), but it remains the case that there are far more men than women. So lifting the visibility of women in technology is no bad thing, especially if it encourages other women to pursue careers in tech startups, which are typically more about meritocratic, flat management that the traditional "IT" roles. So it's a welcome moment that the newly established Girls in Tech London group (@girlsintech_uk) has announced their pick of the Top 100 women in tech in Europe.
